TALLINN, Feb. 25 — Temu, the global ecommerce platform, has entered into a producer responsibility agreement with Eesti Elektroonikaromu OÜ, a producer responsibility organization accredited by the Estonian Environment Agency, to support sellers on its platform in meeting electronic and battery waste compliance requirements.
The cooperation is part of Temu’s broader efforts to support the European Union’s environmental policy framework.
Under the agreement, Temu, together with Eesti Elektroonikaromu OÜ, will support sellers on the platform in fulfilling their obligations in Estonia related to the collection and recycling of electronic equipment and batteries. The cooperation ensures that electronic and battery products sold to Estonia via the Temu platform are properly collected, transported, and recycled in line with local requirements.
Companies selling products in Estonia are required to comply with extended producer responsibility rules. By supporting sellers in meeting their quarterly reporting, fee payment, and registration obligations for electronic equipment and batteries, the collaboration helps ensure compliant shopping environment for both businesses and consumers.
According to Kaur Kuurme, Member of the Management Board of Eesti Elektroonikaromu OÜ, the producer responsibility system ensures that electronic equipment and batteries are collected separately and recycled properly, reducing environmental impact and enabling the recovery of valuable materials. Small electronic waste and batteries can be disposed of free of charge at designated collection points, including waste stations, large retail stores, and collection boxes in shopping centers across Estonia.
Kuurme added that every device that reaches the correct collection point helps reduce environmental risks, supports the circular economy, and allows the recovery of valuable materials such as gold, silver, copper, aluminum, and other critical elements.
“This collaboration with Eesti Elektroonikaromu OÜ will enable sellers on Temu to more easily fulfill their local producer responsibility obligations,” said a Temu spokesperson. “We aim to provide practical guidance and resources to help sellers comply with the law.”
Founded in 2022, Temu now operates in more than 90 markets worldwide. Through its Local Seller Program, sellers from more than 35 countries are able to reach more consumers and scale their businesses. The program was introduced in Estonia in 2025.
